Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. As a board-certified otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist, as well as a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Cat can improve the aesthetic and functional aspects of your nose during a single surgery. Dr. Cat’s philosophy is that the goal of a successful surgery is to create a nose that is subtle and harmonious with your other facial structures. It should look natural and proportional and help bring out other beautiful features of the face – It is about helping you look your best while still looking like yourself. Dr. Cat is always careful to perform rhinoplasty in a relatively conservative manner, achieving longer lasting results and less scarring.
The first step in any successful rhinoplasty procedure is determining your goals and what procedure will best suit your other facial features. Today, there are a wide range of rhinoplasty techniques that can be used to fit any face. This may include removing tissue or augmenting it with cartilage grafts or implants. Dr. Cat will use digital photographs and computer imaging to help you visualize the appearance of your nose after surgery, and to help create visual communication to help her understand your individual aesthetic desires. Together with her, you will lay out a surgical plan to achieve your goals.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Using small incisions either within the nostrils or at the columella (the piece of skin that separates the nostrils), Dr. Cat is able to adjust or remove the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose. If you have trouble breathing, Dr. Cat can address your septum or turbinates to restore functionality.
The usual recovery for rhinoplasty is one to two weeks. During this time, you may experience bruising, swelling, and general discomfort. The bruising usually subsides within a few days. If a splint has been placed to support your septum, it will usually be removed after a week. Any discoloration usually fades after two weeks. You will need to take extra care not to bump your nose while the internal structures heal, which takes several weeks. It will take about 3-4 months to see the final shape.

Here are some examples of rhinoplasty. Each patient’s surgery was tailored specifically to the shape they desired.
Method of Surgery
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. In most cases involving a reduction in shape or size of the nose, angle or removal of a hump, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying skeleton of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped and the skin re-draped over the surface. Patients who have a deviated septum may benefit by correction of this problem. The incisions are placed inside the nose, and often on the collumella.
Following a rhinoplasty procedure, recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people resume their normal activities within a week or two. A lightweight splint is applied to maintain the new shape of the nose. The splint is removed within a week. Nasal splints may be inserted at the time of surgery to protect the septum. These are removed within a week. There is always some stuffiness of the nose, especially when work has been done on the nasal septum. Pain is minimal and is controlled with medications. Bruising occurs around the eyes, but begins to fade within a few days. Discoloration usually disappears in two weeks.
Patients must be careful not to bump their nose, and refrain from any athletic activities or situations where they may suffer trauma to their nose (the bones are still mobile up to several weeks after surgery). The scar on the collumella will slowly heal and eventually become completely un-noticable.
Overall, rhinoplasty surgery significantly improves a person’s appearance. I feel that this is one of the surgeries that really makes a significant impact. My philosophy is that a person should still look like themselves, but an improved version of their self. My patients are already beautiful – beautiful eyes, lips, they just have a nose that takes away from their face a little. After their rhinoplasty – they are stunning. Rhinoplasty is one of my favorite surgeries. I get more hugs and thanks from my rhinoplasty patients than any other. I look forward to seeing you in consultation and going through the process of surgery with you and seeing your smile when you look into the mirror after your surgery!
